Google maakt geen uitzondering voor Fortnite in Play Store

Iedereen klaar voor een standoff? Dan zul je die krijgen. Google en Epic Games zijn de hoofdrolspelers. In het kort: Google wil geen uitzondering maken voor Fortnite, de game van Epic Games, als het aankomt op de cut die Google krijgt voor het beschikbaar stellen van de game in de Google Play Store. Dit heeft google in het openbaar bekendgemaakt in een statement richting The Verge. Epic geeft op zijn beurt in een statement aan richting The Verge dat ze hier wel om gevraagd hebben bij Google, terwijl zij zeggen dat iets vergelijkbaars niet is gevraagd bij Apple.

Het statement van Google

In The Verge luidt als volgt: “Android enables multiple app stores and choices for developers to distribute apps. Google Play has a business model and billing policy that allow us to invest in our platform and tools to help developers build successful businesses while keeping users safe. We welcome any developer that recognizes the value of Google Play and expect them to participate under the same terms as other developers.”, aldus Google.

Het statement van Epic

Gelukkig heeft ook Epic een statement gestuurd naar The Verge met de nodige uitleg: “Epic doesn’t seek a special exception for ourselves; rather we expect to see a general change to smartphone industry practices in this regard. We have asked that Google not enforce its publicly stated expectation that products distributed through Google Play use Google’s payment service for in-app purchase. Epic believes this form of tying of a mandatory payment service with a 30% fee is illegal in the case of a distribution platform with over 50% market share. We note that Google Play’s Developer Distribution Agreement (https://play.google.com/about/developer-distribution-agreement.html) does not require developers use Google payments. It merely references a number of non-contractual documents asking developers to do so. Further, Epic operates a major PC storefront and payment service and we do not force developers using our store to use our payment ecosystem.”

Google vs Epic vanwege Fortnite

En google is het dus niet eens met het feit dat ze hierom gevraagd hebben. Epic zou volgens Google dus niet gevraagd hebben voor een uitzondering bij bijvoorbeeld Apple, waar de game gewoon beschikbaar is en Apple de 30% cut lijkt te krijgen. En volgens Google is de 30% cut, voor welke game dan ook (in dit geval Fortnite), noodzakelijk vanwege de “ability to promote apps and drive discovery, provide security and hosting, and provide technical testing and analytics tools”. Het lijkt, op welke manier je er ook naar kijkt, voorlopig nog niet opgelost te zijn.
