Epic Games klaagt het dramatisch verlopen Fortnite Live Festival aan

Het zat er natuurlijk aan te komen na de bizarre berichten over het Fortnite Live Event in Norwich van het afgelopen weekend. Epic Games gaat juridische stappen ondernemen tegen organisator Exciting Events. Het bedrijf achter Fortnite vindt Exciting blijkbaar niet zo Exciting.

Epic Games had er niks mee te maken

“The quality of our player experience is incredibly important to us, whether it’s inside the game or at official public events like last year’s Fortnite Pro-Am”, vertelt een woordvoerder van Epic Games. “Epic Games was not in any way associated with the event that took place in Norwich and we’ve issued a claim against the organisers in the High Court of London.” Epic heeft een zaak aangezien Exciting Events zo dom was om zonder toestemming van Epic officiele logo’s en artwork van Fortnite te gebruiken om het event aan te kondigen.

“We got to do better next year”

Vanuit de organisatie van het festival, Exciting Events, kwam eerder nog het bericht dat ze volgend jaar terug zouden komen. “I would love it to be an annual thing. Those people who didn’t get value for money on activities, we have got to make that better next year. It is highlighted to us now that we didn’t have enough of that.”  Vlak na deze post haalden ze echter de Facebook pagina van het evenement offline om de honderden boze reacties en claims te ontlopen.

Het boogschieten was geen goede reclame voor de game van Epic Games…

Een klimmuur, een lama en een ‘grot’

Een ticket voor het “festival” koste een slordige 20 euro. Dankzij de populariteit van Fortnite kwamen er zo’n 3000 kinderen op het evenement af. Kassa voor de organisator dus. Niet voor de kids. Want al bij de ingang ging het mis. Ze stonden met de ouders enorm lang wachten in een gigantisch lange rij.

Eenmaal binnen werd het niet veel beter. Er bleek namelijk helemaal niet veel te doen te zijn op het evenement. Er was een klimmuur waar maar vier kinderen op pasten en in een hoekje binnen stond een opblaasbare lama. Met hekken er omheen zodat je er niet eens op kon. Het hoofdpodium waar een danswedstrijd werd gehouden, was veel te klein om de kids die mee wilden dansen te herbergen. En ook bij het pijl en boogschieten was er slechts ruimte voor vier kinderen.

Ook de Cave Experience zag er lekker uit….

“The only attraction my son was interested in was the consoles so that he could play Fortnite”

Kriss Hall ging samen met zijn kinderen naar het evenement in Norwich. Ook hij werd geconfronteerd met een evenement wat niks voorstelde in zijn ogen.  “My son Tom is 11 and I bought tickets to take him as part of his Christmas present as he lives and breathes the game, he loves it. We travelled for 2 hours to get there. When we arrived there was an initial queue of about 20 minutes to get through the ticket barriers which wasn’t a problem. Once through the barriers we joined another queue which we were told by staff was the queue to get into the arena. We stood in this queue for around another hour and 45 minutes. It turns out the queue was to buy tokens or a wristband for the ‘attractions’ within the arena.”

“There were hundreds of people coming out and telling us not to bother as this queue was now full of people demanding a refund which was why it was moving so slowly”, vervolgt Hall. We got out of the queue and headed into the arena as by this point I was loathe to spend anymore money on tokens or a wristband without seeing what the arena had to offer. I have seen better looking school fetes, the only attraction my son was interested in was the consoles so that he could play Fortnite, the queue for this was massive!! He was so disappointed and upset that he asked me if we could go. We spent no more than 10 minutes inside the arena.”

Mocht de fijne organisator op dit moment nog zijn geld tellen, geef nog niet alles uit, want Epic heeft echt wel een zaak straks in de rechtbank…
